(More customer reviews)With the addition of the 912967-03 hard floor tool, this vacuum is perfect for cleaning hardwood floors. By itself, it is very well designed for cleaning stairs. It is designed to sit on the stairs. All swivels on the hose and tools promote ease of handling and keeping the tool flat on the floor for maximum pick-up. The ONLY disadvantage I have seen to this, is that the power button is on the cannister itself, requiring returning to the cannister to power on/off. Maybe the model with the power head has controls on the hose?

(More customer reviews)I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again.

Dyson DC25 Blueprint Upright Vacuum - Limited Edition Review

(More customer reviews)With all the hype that has surrounded Dyson vacuum cleaners since their introduction several years ago, there is one predominant reason why I've never purchased one before now: Not everyone is thrilled with the idea of buying a purple or caterpillar yellow vacuum cleaner, no matter how good it may be. So you can imagine my surprise when I happened upon the Dyson DC25 Blueprint Limited Edition model. The color of the machine is predominantly white and lacks the flashy color scheme of Dyson models past. However, it is still a vision to behold and the departure from the in-your-face color schemes makes more of a design statement than offering the same vacuum in Candy Apple Red. Why this is a limited edition color perplexes me, and why I was willing to pay more for the Dyson DC25 Blueprint model versus the regular Dyson DC25 model is only justified by the fact that I don't want my vacuum to look as though it belongs out in the garage with all my DeWalt tools.
Out of the box, it is worth noting that the instructions and owner's manual are wrapped around the main body of the vacuum causing them to be wrinkled and deformed instead of nice and flat as one would expect. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but the vacuum is not inexpensive and one does expect that the documentation should be better preserved.Assembly was easy. However, there remains some curiosity surrounding one of the provided attachments. As per the verbiage on the box, the Dyson DC25 Blueprint comes equipped with the MINI FLAT OUT HEAD attachment that serves to clean under low furniture and appliances. However, there is no mention of this attachment anywhere in the documentation and, more disappointingly, there isn't any place to attach this tool directly to the vacuum for storage. On Page 8 of the Operating Manual in the "Assembly" section, the third notation states, "Attach tools to the side of the vacuum." It appears to me that of the two attachments that come with the machine, there is place to store the small tool only. This means that whenever you're vacuuming and you decide you need to use the MINI FLAT OUT HEAD, then you either have to have it on your person or you have to return to the pantry and dig up the attachment yourself. Not good design.
But how does the Dyson DC25 Blueprint Upright Vacuum work? I have three floor types in my house: Tile, low pile carpet and deep pile carpet. The vacuum, which features the Dyson Ball, maneuvers very easily on the tile and low pile carpet and the suction is very good. You can practically take a 90 degree turn with this thing! The brush head is not as wide as my older vacuum, so for those of you that are used to a wider vacuum, expect to move your arm back and forth a lot more.
When you move to a deep pile carpet, note that there isn't any way to adjust the height of the brush head between different carpet heights. In one regard, it makes switching to different floor types easier. However, the vacuum is not as maneuverable in the deep pile carpet as it is on the tile and low pile carpet. I noticed also that the brush seems to struggle on the deep pile carpet under certain situations, i.e. when first starting or when making sharp turns. Another observation is that when I completed vacuuming in the deep pile carpet rooms and I placed the vacuum in the upright position to wheel it out of the room, it does not wheel out very easily and practically drags.
I've not had the vacuum long enough to discuss filter cleaning. However, for those interested it does have two filters and Dyson recommends cleaning them with water monthly.
THERE IS ONE THING I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE ABOUT THIS VACUUM, and that is the length of the power cord. It is only long enough to vacuum one room. With my older vacuum, I was able to plug into the outlet in the hallway and vacuum three bedrooms and the den without ever unplugging. With this vacuum, I have to unplug it each time I enter a room. For those with larger than average Master Bedrooms or Family Rooms, it will be necessary to switch receptacles to complete your vacuuming.
In conclusion, the vacuum does have great suction power as I had imagined it would. However, with the hat trick of inconveniences (insufficient tool storage, brush width and power cord length), the job will take longer even though the vacuum is more maneuverable. Had those items been addressed properly in the design stage, I would not hesitate to give this vacuum a 5-star rating. As is, I do not think anything above an average rating is merited. There is room for improvement.

Dyson DC17 Asthma & Allergy Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)Just purchased the DC 17 allergy and asthma today. Have done a lot of research over the last week and read many reviews. I really wanted a good vacuum I can depend on; I have 6 kids and vacuum daily! Best I can tell each model has the same amount of suction, they just have different options in color, filter placement/type and attachments. I was set on the DC14 model but this was on sale for a great price and had a few more attachments I felt I would really use. So far I am pleased. It appears to pick up as expected, I'm pretty impressed with the amount of junk in the canister and my carpets feel cleaner. This is very easy to maneuver; I see no need for the more expensive ball model, unless you will use all the fancy attachments. All the full size Dyson's felt heavy to me in the store, so I was concerned with getting it up and down the stairs, but in comparison to Hoover etc. they all seem to be about the same weight and hey we could all use a good workout. I find no issues with pushing it around, it moves with great ease and transitions surfaces flawlessly. Turning the beater off to move from carpet to solid floors is a breeze and the feature works wonderfully, just a touch of an easy to reach button. The attachments fit on firmly and do not fall off. The wand will take some getting use to as it is solid for about 18+" and I am use to the hose being flexible at the base. I don't have to bend as much using it though so my back is happy! The hose is very easy to remove for use, just cannot use it for quick pick-ups until you unwind the entire plug, so one minor downfall. It states there is a 5 year warranty, I did not read what all that covers, I will just be relieved to have a vacuum last more than a year with the beating I give them. It is important as with ALL canister vacuums that you tap or wipe out the excess dust from the chamber weekly. I have had many canister vacuums and learned early on to do this often to keep the fine dust from building up or you will loose suction. The filter is easy to remove and clean by running under tap water, so will save on replacement filters in the future! Overall I am happy; we will see how I feel at the 6 mo. And 1 yr. mark. But no regrets today. The only negative I can agree with that I have seen over the last week is the not being able to remove the wand without unwinding the entire cord.

(More customer reviews)I have to admit I was skeptical at first because of the lukewarm "professional" reviews of Dyson in general, but now I'm a true convert. I LOVE this vacuum (coming from someone that HATES housecleaning).
Pros
--Canister style vacuum-great for those of us with back problems that can't push around a heavy upright for long.
--Suction power-WONDERFUL suction on this thing.
--Power brushes-stiff bristles "refresh" the carpet and can easily be turned off by foot controls (no bending down).
--Maneuverability-this has a ball style joint that makes it extremely maneuverable.
--Compact storage-it wraps around itself and is light enough to easily pick up and carry.
--No filters or belts to replace-just clean the built-in filter every 6 months with tap water.
--Quiet!-this is the quietest vacuum I've ever used.
--Retractable cord-guess this is standard on most canisters, but as a former upright user this is a nice feature to me.
--Low profile vacuum head-makes it easier to get under the couches, beds, etc.
--No bags to buy...ever!
--5 Year Warranty
Cons
--No headlight-funny I didn't realize how dark some of my corners are.
--Using attachments is a little awkward because of the larger, inflexible handle, but I imagine I'll get used to it.
--Short power cord-could definitely use a few more feet, but I suspect this was as long as they could fit into the compact unit.
--Power brushes-just a warning here, they're not for delicate carpets. They're rather stiff compared to most and I imagine could do some damage to older/thinner rugs.
--Small collection bin-available volume seems small due to the compact design, but it's EASY to empty, so not really a big problem.
--Price-it's not cheap, but I did find a 20% off coupon on-line for another store so saved $100.
There are enough cons that I can't give this vacuum 5 stars, but none of them are serious enough in my opinion to be major detractors. I'm definitely happy with my purchase.

Dyson DC07 Cyclone Animal Upright Vacuum, Purple Review

(More customer reviews)I cannot even begin to tell you the number of vacuum cleaners I have had over the years. I take in abandoned an abused animals.
Usually within 6 months the motor would go out. I have a Oreck and a Fantom Thunder. The Oreck worked great for awhile but the motor did go out and had to be replaced. I didn't like the fact it had no on board tools and the bags are expensive and hard to find. The Fanton is heavy and it started leaking dust around the dust cup. Both of these vacuum cost amost $400.00 at the time I purchased them.
After some research I purchased this Dyson. I am so glad I did.
This vacuum is a pet lovers dream. Before I used the Dyson for the first time, I vacuumed my carpet in my family room several times with 2 other vacuums, then I went back over it with the Dyson. I expected a little more pet hair after all it was a new vacuum, but it is what else I get that shocked and embarrassed me. In the vacuum cup there was a little pet hair but there was also this ultra fine dirt, it almost looked like powder. There was so much of this dust I decided to put it in a bag and weigh it. The embarrasing part is it weighed 4#, I couldn't believe it. You must understand I vacuum twice a day everyday and I shampoo my carpets once a month. I take pride in the fact my house has no pet odors, I work hard to make sure of this. But, all this was in my carpet. After I finished vacuuming my carpet look renewed like it was freshly shampooed.
I love this vacuum and wish I would have purchased it sooner. It is well worth every penny and then some. If has every attachment you could ever want. It took a little time to figure out how to attach them but once I did it was wonderful. The powerhead upholstery tool is fabulous.
Take if from the queen of vacuum cleaners, this is the one to buy.

(More customer reviews)I've been using the SmartVac for over a month now. It is a great vacuum for the price. Some of the positives about it are: terrific vacuuming suction, clean air smell while vacumming, easy attachment system, and soft wheels for hardwood floors. I noticed that after I vacuumed my 15 year old carpets that I had to use force to close the doors since the nap had been raised so high. The rugs look noticeably cleaner and have a raised, fresh look. Negatives to the vacuum are the heavy weight, and the cheap plastic pedal that lowers the handle takes getting used to.
To address some of the comments made by others. The attachments all fit very snugly in their holders. You need to use enough force to "snap" them into place. I, too, thought the upholstery tool was loose until I realized that you need to use quite a bit of force to snap it into place. Once snapped, it won't go anywhere until you snap it out. For vacumming hardwood floors, you need to make sure that the vacuum is lowered to its lowest position and that the brushes are turned off. I also bought a small turbo head, a deluxe floor brush and a 10 foot extra hose. They work great together for cleaning under beds and for the car and furniture.
In summary, I think this is a great vacuum. For an extra $30 or so you can get some attachments that really make it work wonders. I now can leave it at the bottom of the stairs, while using the 20 feet of hose to clean all of the stairs and the wall, if I'm inclined! The suction is still very strong even with the extra hose. Hope this is helpful.

(More customer reviews)Instead of writing a long paragraph, I'll just jump to the pros and cons
Pros:
- Amazing suction: The amount of dirt and lint it sucks is incredible. Compared to my old hoover where I had to go over the carpet few times to suck out all the dirt, the DC23 is so powerful, I only have to run over the carpet once or twice and the carpet is clean. This is primarily due to the strong suction but also to the very powerful brush.
- I have very expensive and old rugs with tassels. When the motorized brush runs over the tassels, the brush shuts off. My old hoover vacuum would either gets intangled with the tassels or the rubber band connected to the motor would snap.
- It has a telescopic rod. When fully contracted, the DC23 is ideal for cleaning steps.

cons:
- VERY BIG WEAKNESS: The motorhead is so strong (a plus as I described above), it sucks in my delicate and fine rugs. Not only it sucks it in, but it's also stripping some of the threading from the 100 year old rugs. I wish Dyson had put a level to control the rotator head instead of just providing an on/off switch.
- Again, because of the strong suction, I'm having to empty the canister 3 or 4 types every time I vacuum my whole house, 2300sf. This is pretty minor actually but it was worth noting because my wife was complaining about it. I didn't seem to mind or care about having to empty out the canister frequently.

(More customer reviews)We have had the DC14 Animal less than a week, but so far we are amazed at it's performance. With 2 teenage kids, 2 Newfoundland dogs, a cat, a parrot and a finch, the floors see their fair share of dirt, hair, crumbs and feathers. We have mostly carpet with some hardwood floors with runners. This machine does an equally great job on all. Its is easy to push around and the long cord allows you to cover a lot of area without having to find another outlet. The wand is easy to use and, judging by the reviews on the DC07, an improved design. Instead of having to disconnect it from the hose, turn it around and re-connect it as noted on earlier reviews on the DC07, you just release it from the handle and extend it.
I don't put a lot of credit in the "sweep with old vacuum then sweep with new" to determine how much better the new unit is. I tried sweeping with the new unit and then swept again with the new unit and picked up more dirt. The test that convinced me that this does a better job is on an item that has never been succesfully cleaned with the old vacuum. We have a 2x4 dirt mat that is in front of the door between the garage and house. It is of a thick fiber material that catches and holds dirt and especially dog hair. Our old Hoover bagless has never been able to completely clean it. In order to remove the hair, we had to use a short stiff bristle brush and brush it out. The DC14 did the job. Did it do it in one swipe you ask? No. I had to sweep it good to get it clean but it did remove ALL the hair and dirt. I was definitly impressed.
We have not used the tools enough to form any kind of opinion on them yet. We have used the turbo brush on the furniture and it seems to do a decent job but I would recommend that you remove the handle from the hose and fit the brush on the end of the hose. It makes it much easier to use.
OK! That's the fluff. Now for the grit.
I guess nothing in this world is perfect. This is the second DC14 we have had in a week. The first unit made an awful ratcheting noise when we used it on the runners on the hardwood floor. I had seen other reviews that commented on this along with statements that it is a design feature to prevent damage to the life-long brush drive belt. If a rug gets sucked up into the brush and tries to stall the brush, a clutch begines to slip rather than burn the belt up. I called Dyson and they confirmed this. Good plan in theory. However, we had tried both the DC07 and the DC14 display models at the store. The section of carpet was similar to a throw rug. I could see the rug being sucked up to the head and hear the brush bar flogging the snot out of it and neither one of those machines ratcheted. In my case, the brush bar was turning and didn't sound like it was trying to stall so, assuming maybe the tension on the clutch on my machine was not set properly, I took it back and exchanged it for another. No more ratcheting sounds. I think Dyson needs a little more "Quality Control" on their clutch. I might add there is a good example why some items might be better purchased from a local store. Much less hassle if you do experience a problem.
All and all, we are very satisfied with the DC14. Only time will tell on it's durability. But in view of the fact it is an improved version of the DC07 and reviews have shown for the most part it holds up well, I expect this vacuum to last as long or longer than any other leading bagless vacuum currently on the market.
If it wasn't for the fact of having to take the first unit back, I would have given it 5 stars. I recommend the DC14.

(More customer reviews)I have been considering a Dyson vacuum for over a year - the high price was always a concern, along with wondering if the performance was really THAT GOOD. I was hoping a friend would get one so I could borrow it, but my friends haven't cooperated! We just got a dog about a month ago, and she's started shedding, so I thought that it was the perfect time to take the plunge into the Dyson pool of satisfied customers. I was a little conflicted about the re-manufactured Dysons, but until I see how the brand performs, spending over $500 was beyond my budget. I bought from Amazon because an extra one-year warranty is included.
I ordered the vacuum YESTERDAY and it arrived today (thanks to Amazon Prime free shipping!). Assembly took about 5 minutes after unpacking all the accessories. The manual is a little strange, but you can figure it out yourself by just looking at the unit. All you have to do is put the handle with the telescoping rod into the main body. My vacuum seems to be in new condition and still has that new-plastic smell. It's actually quite pretty with its purple highlights.
Now, to the test...I had just vacuumed (previous vacuum is a Eureka) the strip of carpeting from our kitchen into the living room, which is the main high-traffic area in our house. The berber carpet is beaten down, even though it's only about 5 years old, because we walk over this area many times a day. The nap is pretty shot, so I wasn't expecting a great result. But I was surprised and pleased to see that the carpet looks cleaner after using the Dyson.
When you first turn on the vacuum, it seems quiet compared to other vacs - I have a Eureka Boss SmartVac, and the Dyson is much quieter in comparison. But it does have a high-pitched whine in operation that might bother some people, so ear plugs or a set of headphones might be a good thing. I usually listen to the radio on a Walkman (remember those??) while I vacuum, so it won't bother me. The dog doesn't seem to enjoy it, though.
I got a LOT more dust, dirt and hair up from the carpet. In fact, I wonder if all that hair is from the dog we just got, because she hasn't been here that long! OK, well, so far, so good. I emptied the bin of the Dyson, which is easy and quick, just one button and done. I changed the bag on the Eureka and vacuumed the hallway from the living room to the bedrooms. The Eureka really sucks down onto the carpet *hard* when the bag is changed, but I'm not sure it is still getting ALL the dirt. It's hard to push and feels as if I am almost pulling the carpet up as I go.
The Dyson is much easier to push and as I vacuum, I wonder if it's really even doing anything, yet once again, when I go over the same area and check the dust bin, sure enough, there is another pile of dirt, dust, and hair. I wondered as I read other reviews whether people were just not used to seeing the stuff their vacuums picked up, because of the bags, so they merely *thought* the Dyson was getting more, but my two little tests have convinced me.
I also read Consumer Reports and they do not give the Dyson a very good score, not compared to other vacuums. That gave me pause, because I do take their reviews into consideration. But this time, I'm glad I didn't let their reviews keep me from buying this machine. Everywhere I went on the 'net, it was people absolutely RAVING over their Dyson. Now I'm one of them!!

Bissell Healthy Home Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 12 Amp, 16N5 Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using the original Bissell Healthy Home vac for nearly two years and have been extremely pleased with it. This updated version builds upon the strengths of the original and adds a few new features.
My biggest complaint with the original Healthy Home was the weight. Bissell has addressed this common complaint by making the new model lighter by a few pounds. But, the lighter weight appears to come at the expense of solid construction - parts like the handle and collection bin feel less substantial. I know you can't equate durability with weight, but my initial impression of the new model was that it's less resistant to the knocks and bruises that vacs tend to take. Too early to tell, however. It has a five year warranty like the old model.
Assembly is a snap - two screws for the handle (which are no longer recessed, so they are easy to get in) and two screws for the cord wrap.
Operationally, the new vac preforms just as well as the old model. I have seven cats. Yes, seven. This is the house where vacuums get put to the test. The Bissell takes all that is thrown at it with nary a problem. The carpet suction is excellent; the tool suction is good. Easy to maneuver with large, non-marring wheels.
As in the old model, the carpet beater can be turned off for hard floor or very delicate/thin carpet use. The switches have been repositioned so they are less prone to being hit accidentally. The beater has a clutch, so if it gets bound up in something it stops turning rather than burn out the belt. The belt is (according to Bissell) a "life time" belt.
The carpet height is adjustable with a knob. I prefer that type of manual adjustment since the auto adjust models from other brands never seem to get it right on some carpets. Doing it manually lets you set a higher height for more delicate rugs, and a lower, more aggressive height for rugs that need to be churned up more to get the pet hair/dirt out.
The HEPA filter has been moved from the side of the vac to under the collection bin. According to Bissell this allows for better functionality/cleaner exhaust. Seems to work fine, but the old method also worked well. Having the filter in-line does make the vac narrower - that's probably the main benefit.
It still has the foam (washable) pre-filter. Great feature to have since it extends the life of the non-washable HEPA. I've been getting about 18 months life out of the HEPA filters in the old model.
The hose routing has been changed. It's a bit harder to dislodge than the old model for tool use, but still fairly easy compared with other vacs I've used.
The collection bin is also easy to take off and empty. I prefer bagless since I can't stand paying for bags. The new bin has straight sides to help get all the crud out. Still, dumping out the bin of any bagless vac can be messy, and you sometimes have to reach in to get out the big clumps of light-weight material (such as cat hair). If you have major allergies or just don't like to deal with this, you may want to consider a bagged model.
Tips:
1) Every so often take the collection bin apart and wash it out. Very fine dust can collect in the upper cyclonic chamber, and can affect performance. Make sure all parts are bone dry before putting them back on the vac.
2) I recommend you replace the plastic wand with an aluminum wand. You can get it at the Bissell site online (register online and you'll get free shipping). The metal wand is more robust than the plastic and also has positive click stops to ensure it does not fold up when you push hard.
3) The contour head is also a nice add-on if you have pets. It is a non-powered head (unlike the included turbo head) which is good for more delicate fabrics or furniture throws with loose threads that can snag. You can get it from Bissell or Amazon.
4) If you want a full-size floor brush, the models from Sears fit the Bissell.
In summary, this is an excellent vac. The new model takes a couple of steps forward and perhaps only a half-step back (construction quality). If you can get the old model at a discount, it's well worth it if you can deal with the weight. If not, this model is also highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)This is one powerful vacuum. I researched it on the internet (Dyson has a great web site) and read about it in a couple of magazines. I was impressed and decided to try it. After using it in my country home I can say it's close to, but not, alas, perfect for my needs. I have a mixture of floor surfaces; hard wood, linoleum, tile, wall to wall carpet and LOTS of area rugs. And I have plenty of dirt, pets and people running through the house in all seasons. The Dyson is great on everything EXCEPT the area rugs, which it has a tendency to try to gobble up... The suction power is irrefutable and I will never look at my (or anyone else's) carpets the same way again. I pulled 3 cannisters of dirt, hair and sand out of my 8' x 11' area rug with the first use of the Dyson after a recent run over the same rug with my old vacuum! Unfortunately, the Dyson also tried to eat the area rug and made a horrible sound while doing so. After a toll free call to Dyson's service center (at 5:30 pm on a Sunday evening) I was instructed to turn off the "beater brushes" and use the mode for bare floors. The horrendous sound and the "gobbling" stopped, but unfortunately without the beater brush, the machine did not do an adequate cleaning job on the area rug.
PROS: quiet operation, very powerful, easy to clean dirt cannister, super long cord, super long "expanding" hose with attachments makes cleaning stairs, crevices and window sills easy, great on wall to wall carpet and hard wood, tile and linoleum floors, carries tools on board, light weight and easy to manuever without self-propulsion, lifetime air filters and bagless design saves money and the environment, GREAT phone based customer support.
CONS: pricey, encounters problems with area rugs, difficult to assemble out of box (required a call to toll free customer service to solve an assembly problem), instruction booklet a little sparse, mostly plastic parts raise some concern with a new product, at [this price] all the accessories (floor tool and pet hair tool) should be standard -- NOT "extras", poor response from e-mail customer service on their web site, unable to purchase "accessories" right now and not able to find out from company when these will be available.
RECOMMENDED? Yes BUT with some reservations - if you have hard floor and/or wall to wall carpet surfaces and are willing to pay for good design and power with convenience, this might be the right vacuum for you. If you have lots of large, area rugs, you might want to consider something else

i did a lot of research and we first settled for a Dyson DC23 TurbineHead Canister Vacuum. We took the dyson back the the same day. I thought dyson had really reinvented the vacuum but its more the Science fiction interpretation of a vaccum. everything is flimsy and the brush wont go where its supposed to go as it is too high for underneath sofas and cupboards. the dyson is nothing wifes can actually work with. maybe someone who buys at thinkgeek likes that, my wife didnt.
we then settled for the miele ariel and my wife loves it. she said its like vacuuming in a different league. the sucktion power is just awesome...

Summary: This is arguably one of the best "bagless" household vacuum cleaners money can buy. Dyson's root cyclone technology really does perform. And this latest Level 3 Root Cyclone trumps even its other models.
If you're serious about having a real clean environment, this is THE product to buy. I just moved into an apartment a month ago and they replaced the carpets in most of the area and steam cleaned the others that they deemed need not be replaced. I used the vacuum in both and I can tell you that steam cleaning old carpets may get rid of surface dirt and stains, but Dyson is your friend if you want to suck out most (if not all) the dirt hidden below the surface. I could not believe how much dust it was picking up in such a small area. The bin filled up pretty fast so I was on to round 2 in the same patch of rug. This time it was picking up very find dust. Dust that may have been stuck for years and was never sucked out from other vacuum systems. Round 3 time and you will smile when you realize there is nothing else that's being collected in the bin. As for the newly installed carpets, I could only collect find dust until no more could be collected.
Unlike other vacuums in the market, this is one heck of a quiet vacuum in a relative way. Of course it's still noisy, but as with other brands this won't hurt your noise environment. In fact I am able to vacuum even at night with no fear that my neighbors beside and above my unit will hear me.
You're not only paying for the suction technology, you're also paying for the build quality. Each part has quality reflected on it. While the design is modern.
Of course nothing is perfect. This thing is heavy. DO NOT vacuum the stairs while the machine is on the top stair because if this thing falls on you, there will be serious injury and damage.
The quick-draw expandable hose is a good idea. But it's also not as flexible as I would have imagined it to be. It's easy to expand and retract, but the long handle commands that the vacuum is at a distance from where you want to use the telescope handle if you want to operate it comfortably.
Among other bagless vacuums, this is the easiest to dump the contents. But just like all other bagless vacuums, dust will certainly be flying away from the trash unless you have a very deep trash can. Plus the fine holes around the cyclone technology gets clogged from fine dust in time so you will need to clean those tiny holes from time to time if you want the Dyson to perform it's best everytime.
The lifetime Hepa filter is a great addition below. They recommend only washing with water and drying at least 24 hours near a heater/radiator - and they really do mean 24 hours. It's big and thick so it won't dry out quickly. So if you find the need to frequently vacuum the next day, I recommend getting an extra Hepa filter to use.
The motorized brush bar helps pick up stuff from the carpet. This can be turned off for delicate rugs and floors. Just like other vacuums, hair and other long items can be trapped around the brush bar and need to be removed from time to time. It is also belt-driven so this can snap and break especially if inadvertently caught on a loose item. So be careful of this.
Overall, Dyson is a wonderful machine to have and will surely last longer if properly taken care of.
If you are extremely allergic to dust, I believe a better alternative is to go with Oreck XL as it ensures you will not be in contact with the dust particles due to it's ingenious bag design that closes shut when removed.

The 'Never lose suction' tagline is a marketing ploy, since Dyson too will get clogged and lose suction if not properly maintained. All other vacuum machines will NOT lose suction either if the filter bags are replaced often enough.
Overall, however, its performance beats all other vacuums (including the over-hyped Oreck, which is simply a rip-off) hands-down.
- Every few months, the user must clean out the central cylinder of the very fine dust, or it will get clogged and lose suction. The way you do this is by removing the dust collector and then separate the core cylinder from the glass casing. Use another vacuum to suck dirt out of the little holes on the side of the cylinder. Also, if you look up the cylinder from the bottom, you'll see caked dust collected at the top of the cylinder. If you gently bang the cylinder (upright) on the floor, you'll be shocked how much fine dust (about two cups worth) will fall out of the cylinder. Use the other vacuum to suck them away. Also, take out the 'permanent' filter and wash them. They, too, get clogged with the very fine dust.
- The machine is very heavy and bulky, and it's quite a chore to transport it between floors. The hose extension is very awkward to use because the point of bending is near the tip. The high profile of the vacuum head makes it impossible to vacuum under the bed, couch, etc.
- The instruction manual is poorly written, and setting up and maintaining the machine takes a steep learning curve. Dyson should include a video instruction.
- I, too, and concerned about how much carpet fiber the Dyson is tearing off the carpet, which you can clearly see in the dust collector. However, you can also see the amount of coarse and fine dust it's picking up as well. One impressive feature of Dyson that lived up to the hype is that it will pick up much dust from carpet that was just cleaned by a regular vacuum machine.
- Dyson rarely goes on sale, but I bought mine at Sears, which had Dyson on sale last year for $379. Also, buy the regular Dyson and avoid the 'Animal', which is a rip-off. The rotating brush that comes with the 'Animal' is air powered and is too weak to work well on the stairs.
Summary: If you have a large house with a lot of carpeted areas, then Dyson is for you. You may also build some muscle by carrying this behemoth up and down the stairs. However, you may need another vacuum for the stairs and also for a quick clean up in the kitchen.

(More customer reviews)HOLY COW is all I could say after using it for the first time. The amount of "stuff" that came out of our carpets was astonishing. I also feel like I got a great deal on it, on sale for $299 at best buy. That was about the maximum of my price threshold having never seen one in action. Well let me tell you at $499 it would have been a good deal based on how much suction power this thing has. I feel so fortunate to have gotten one for such a good price.
After reading some reviews and product comparisons I decided on the DC17. We needed a new vacuum as our old one was around 8 years old and a lately it seemed to suck at sucking. We have 2 kids and a Labrador Retriever who are constantly tracking dirt and such into the house as well as the animal hair and dander...OMG the amount of hair and dander was astonishing...the carpets after one vacuuming were noticeably cleaner and looked to my wife and I as if they had been steam cleaned.
The only problem with getting this vacuum is that we are now aware of the filth that was residing unseen in our carpets for all those years and the shame that accompanies it is almost unbearable...but persevere we must!!
One note that I read elsewhere and again in the documentation was not to use carpet fresh powder or things like it.
