I usually take my dog to the groomer the day I spray the house, but I have also put her in our rec room and with a closed door she's fine. I spray about every four to five weeks even if I don't see fleas.

I tried less expensive products available in local stores and they did not work for more than a day or two at best. Most likely, because they did not kill the eggs or larva.
If you are reading this review you may already know that fleas have a 4-stage life cycle - Eggs, larva, pupa, flea. Many products kill the fleas only, which is a complete waste of your time and money. You MUST use a product with an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) or they will continue to hatch and lay more eggs.
When using this product, I followed the directions and moved furniture, vacuumed like a mad woman and sprayed under couches before moving them back into position. It was a grueling day but it seems it was well worth it. For the price of one can, it looks like I may have finally rid my home of the nasty little suckers.
If things change in the next week or two, I'll post an update. But for now, it's looking very good. Yay!

It's been 3 weeks and NOT ONE FLEA! They are GONE. GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!!

(More customer reviews)We have a German Wire Haired Setter named Maxwell Quincy (Max for short) who is allergic to fleas and flea control products. Max is 11 years old and has had to be medicated every summer for this problem. While doing research on flea control I read about nematodes and decided to give them a try. They have worked wonders for Max, this is the first summer he hasn't had a severe reaction to fleas!
After seeing how well they worked to control the fleas I bought some for the cabbage cut worms in our garden. I am pleased to say that in the 25 years we have had a garden this is the first year we haven't lost one head of cabbage yet.
Plus, if you are worried about this, we have checked a small specimen from each shipment with a microscope and found the nematodes to be alive and well upon receipt. Our grandchildren love watching them and get excited everytime we get a package.
Nematodes prey upon more than just fleas and cut worms so I suggest checking out the list of things they kill. If you have trouble with any of the pests on the list purchase some for yourself and I am sure you will be pleased with the results. Nematodes are microscopic wonders!

Once sprayed around perimeter of each room or around outside of home this product kills live fleas and continues to interupt new flea generation from hatched egg/larvae. Will usually eliminate fleas on a permanant basis unless fleas are re-introduced by pets, etc. Fast knock-dosn and continuous protection will please those who have been bothered by flea bites as well as pets that are kept inside. Label says will remain effective for actual killing for up to 120 days but will more than likely eliminate your problem once and for all. If you bring pets in and out of your home you will probably want to purchase the direct pet spray as well to be thoroughly protected. In a rental at the beach I encountered a large flea infestation after moving in. It was just a matter of spaying one time to solve the problem. Highly reocmmended.

(More customer reviews)For those that negatively reviewed this product, that's sad. INSTANTLY I saw the fleas trying to get away and one by one, die within seconds! No, its intended use is not to last for a month like topical treatments (which don't work anyhow). This IS safe for pets!
Here's my advice.
1. Don't waste money experimenting.
2. Start with the house. You WILL have to use something to help the carpets/floors/furniture...THIS IS NOT THE PRODUCT FOR THAT! I suggest Fleabusters RX While it might be a little difficult to apply, its WORTH THE EFFORT!!! And the treatment is guaranteed for a year! You can find it on Amazon for $30. Until it arrives, just vacuum every day...its good exercise anyways.
Did you know that only 5% of the fleas in your home are on your pets? The other 95% are IN YOUR carpets and furniture and pet beds!
3. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. EVERY DAY!!! THROW THE BAGS IN AN OUTSIDE TRASH CAN AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE! If you happen to have a bagless vacuum like myself, then clean it out after each use and if you're a freak like me wash it each time with soapy water.
4. Treat pets with this upon first treatment of the house with this stuff! I let this sit in their fur a day. My cat has white fur on her belly. When I sprayed this in that area, I saw all the bloody defication and fleas first hand. =/ Poor kitty. BUT THIS TREATMENT WILL KILL ALL OF THE FLEAS THAT ARE ON YOUR PET THE SECOND YOU SPRAY IT ON THEM.
5. The next day, bathe your pets with flea shampoo. I use the same brand as this spray! You can find that on here for $10. This isn't necessary unless you're a freak like me. You can just use soapy water if you want.
6. Repeat the spray/bath after every 2 weeks for about 4 months. I know it seems like a lot of work, but some of the eggs and stuff can take up to 4 months to hatch!
Then, if you walk a dog or let your pet outdoors, I would suggest dusting their butt with this before letting them in or getting those chewable pills that kill fleas when they bite your pet. Capatrol?? Its called something like that. Especially during flea season if you have one or after playing/encountering with flea infested pets.
I've found topicals and collars to be completely useless...
The only negative thing I can say about this product is that it kind of smells like pepper. Its a weird association to have!

The smell is strong and will take your breath away. The ingredients in it are toxic to cats which I found out after I put it on and decided to read up on it. (I am an idiot) The cats went absolutely nuts once it was put on. It spread all down there sides and there hair was oily. I had to give the cats a bath which is what I was trying to avoid by buying the spot on to begin with. If I could give this product a negative number I would.

This has been very effective at killing fleas immediately in the yard and house - only need a light dusting. When my present order arrives we'll give our hound one light dusting, then just keep the yard and house maintained every 2-3 weeks. Never seen any ill effects or reactions. Cheaper and more importantly more effective than the high cost Advantix. We also use the natural DE, Brewer's yeast, garlic etc... but this flea killer works the best!

It doesn't smell chemical-y, aggravate my allergies, or give me a headache like some sprays do, and I feel comfortable spraying it in the kitchen or around the cats' feeding area, where we had an ant problem. You can really control the direction of the spray and get into nooks and crannies easily. I even chased a big fly around and sprayed it dead. Normally would never be able to kill something like that. It's also good if bugs in general give you the heebie jeebies and you want to be able to kill them from a few feet away. Especially great for apartment city dwellers who can't control the cleanliness of their neighbors...

(More customer reviews)Spring has finally arrived here in the north and with it come the ticks. Yuck! I have two dogs and found one tick on my husky mix and four ticks on my pit mix. Seeing as my pit was having more problems, I sprayed her down with Adams flea & tick spray about 10 days ago, but I did NOT spray my husky at the time.
This past weekend we went out of town to go hiking in Minnesota and we ended up having an experiment without trying. The ticks there were HORRIBLE, the worst I have ever experienced.
I took my dogs out hiking at a state park in the morning and when we came back to camp I found four ticks on my husky, who, as previously noted, did not have any tick spray on him. My pit was clean, as was I.
We then went on a hike at the same park in the afternoon. The result... I had three ticks crawling on my legs. My husky had over 20 ticks (!) crawling around on him. My pit had one tick on her paw, but I never sprayed her paw with Adams flea & tick spray, so I can't blame that one on them.
That night I found a few more ticks on my husky, and when we drove home the next day he had another three ticks crawling around on him during the drive that I had to pull over and remove.
The results were astounding. My unprotected husky had 20+ ticks. My pit had one tick. Both dogs were leashed during our hikes and remained on the trail. The only difference is my pit had Adams sprayed on 10 days ago while my husky did not. If that is any indication to the effectiveness of this product, then I will remain a customer for years to come!

I had already treated our two cats with Frontline Plus and thoroughly vacuumed our rugs and carpets every day for over a week before finally buying First Defense. We had already seen a marked improvement, though not total, decline in flea activity. It seems that First Defense may be helping.
I would probably give this product 4 stars if it had better instructions. My main problem with instructions is that they were unclear as to how long to leave the powder in the carpets and rugs. They were clear about making certain that children and pets are not present while treating floors and carpets, but did not specify when you could reintroduce pets and children. They also did not indicate for how long you should leave the powder in the carpets and rugs. I left the powder in the treated areas overnight before vacuuming. Despite keeping my cats away from the treated rooms and vacuuming the rugs and carpets, they may have ingested some of the product. It may have been a coincidence but my cats threw up the next couple of days, so I'm now a little concerned about treating with First Defense again.

(More customer reviews)Our apartment has thick wall to wall carpeting and it became infested with fleas last summer from our 2 cats... awful!! Fleas are the WORST! By that time the cats had both been given Frontline, which stops any new infestation, but the carpeting was thick and the fleas had colonized it. At first we wanted to go the all-natural route, trying sprinkling baking soda and salt into the carpeting, then a natural boric-acid based flea killer, combined with frequent vacuuming. None of these really did the trick-- after a few days, they were jumping on us and biting us again!! And, when fleas are bad, after a while, you don't CARE any more whether something is natural-- you'll do anything to get rid of the fleas, which seem to have the survival capabilities to outlast nuclear war. However, this stuff really works-- better than the flea bombs, actually, and less disruptive. Of course, we still put anything connected with food away before spraying this stuff on the carpeting, but after that, just had to go away for a couple of hours, then come back and open all the windows and let it ventilate with a box fan for another hour or so. And-- best thing-- the fleas were gone for GOOD!! (it does take about a week or so for the new flea "babies" that hatch to die off, so you may get a bite or two during that time. I would estimate they are about 85-90% gone after treatment, then gone altogether after 1-2 weeks. But they are definitely on their way out after treatment.) A good idea is to keep a spare can of this stuff in the closet for when summer and flea season come around next year.

(More customer reviews)I must admit I was very skeptical about this, but decided to give it a try out of sheer desperation, and based on the favorable reviews on Amazon. I've got a flea issue with my bedroom carpet, and have tried sprays, continuous vacuuming, boric acid treatments, and dosing my pet with Frontline & Advantage products. While the Advantage works pretty darn well ON the pet, the carpet was still infested no matter what I tried. I plugged in this little contraption on the floor next to my bed, and within TWO HOURS I've already captured 18 fleas, and can actually SEE them hopping across the carpet to get to the trap! I think this is a brilliant, safe, pesticide-free solution to dealing with those pesky little ankle-biting devils that hide in the carpet! I'll continue to vacuum, but I intend to keep this thing plugged in at all times to grab the ones that get away or are newly hatched. Don't hesitate to buy this product!

Fleas Away Boric Acid Carpet Treatment - 1 Lb. Review

(More customer reviews)The good: This stuff works. Fleas are history! Period. It is about as non-toxic to pets and people as a flea killer can be. Compared to the high toxicity of traditional insecticide-based sprays, boric acid is innocuous. One treatment lasts for months. Even better, fleas never seem to develop any resistance to boric acid like they do to insecticides. Finally, boric acid is much, much cheaper than insecticides.
Notes: Boric acid takes four to six weeks to do its job. Be patient!. It kills slowly but effectively until *all* fleas and eggs are gone. After the initial kill, the effects last for months.
Boric acid is a white, flour-like dust. The lady of this house (the boss) would tell you that she loves the 100% effective flea control but does not like the unsightly, dusty coating on furniture. You must put up with the dusty appearance for *at least a week*, until you do the the first vacuuming.
I, on the other hand, could not care less about the appearance. From my point of view (1) the fleas are history, (2) neither she, nor I nor our pets are poisoned as we would be by the very toxic insecticide-based treatments, (3) the boric acid effect lasts for months and (4) fleas do not develop a resistance to boric acid. At least they have not developed any in the 15 years we've used it for flea control.
Comment: In contrast, while insecticide based flea controls are generally effective, they are also *toxic* to people and pets. The younger or older the people and pets, the more troublesome these effects are. Fleas develop resistance to insecticides. You have to use stronger and stronger insecticides, larger doses, rotate among insecticides, etc. to maintain their efficacy. This is bad cycle to get into for your health and your pets health. Enough said.
