Diatomaceous earth is named after diatoms, the fossils of single celled organisms which have sharp edges that cut insects' exoskeletons so that they dehydrate to death. It's like razor wire for roaches. AND unlike boric acid (borax), it's food safe, so humans can use it in kitchens.
Cover your mouth and eyes when you use this, because big puffs of dust will come up with each spray. It's safe stuff to use, but it's not fun to breathe.

I tried less expensive products available in local stores and they did not work for more than a day or two at best. Most likely, because they did not kill the eggs or larva.
If you are reading this review you may already know that fleas have a 4-stage life cycle - Eggs, larva, pupa, flea. Many products kill the fleas only, which is a complete waste of your time and money. You MUST use a product with an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) or they will continue to hatch and lay more eggs.
When using this product, I followed the directions and moved furniture, vacuumed like a mad woman and sprayed under couches before moving them back into position. It was a grueling day but it seems it was well worth it. For the price of one can, it looks like I may have finally rid my home of the nasty little suckers.
If things change in the next week or two, I'll post an update. But for now, it's looking very good. Yay!

It's been 3 weeks and NOT ONE FLEA! They are GONE. GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!!

(More customer reviews)We have a German Wire Haired Setter named Maxwell Quincy (Max for short) who is allergic to fleas and flea control products. Max is 11 years old and has had to be medicated every summer for this problem. While doing research on flea control I read about nematodes and decided to give them a try. They have worked wonders for Max, this is the first summer he hasn't had a severe reaction to fleas!
After seeing how well they worked to control the fleas I bought some for the cabbage cut worms in our garden. I am pleased to say that in the 25 years we have had a garden this is the first year we haven't lost one head of cabbage yet.
Plus, if you are worried about this, we have checked a small specimen from each shipment with a microscope and found the nematodes to be alive and well upon receipt. Our grandchildren love watching them and get excited everytime we get a package.
Nematodes prey upon more than just fleas and cut worms so I suggest checking out the list of things they kill. If you have trouble with any of the pests on the list purchase some for yourself and I am sure you will be pleased with the results. Nematodes are microscopic wonders!

Will usually eliminate fleas on a permanant basis unless fleas are re-introduced by pets, etc. Fast knock-dosn and continuous protection will please those who have been bothered by flea bites as well as pets that are kept inside. Label says will remain effective for actual killing for up to 120 days but will more than likely eliminate your problem once and for all. If you bring pets in and out of your home you will probably want to purchase the direct pet spray as well to be thoroughly protected. In a rental at the beach I encountered a large flea infestation after moving in. It was just a matter of spaying one time to solve the problem. Highly reocmmended.

This has been very effective at killing fleas immediately in the yard and house - only need a light dusting. When my present order arrives we'll give our hound one light dusting, then just keep the yard and house maintained every 2-3 weeks. Never seen any ill effects or reactions. Cheaper and more importantly more effective than the high cost Advantix. We also use the natural DE, Brewer's yeast, garlic etc... but this flea killer works the best!

(More customer reviews)Sprinkle a little of this around your door, behind your stove and fridge, behind the couch, etc. As long as it's dry and doesn't get damp or vacuumed up, it keeps working. It's the absolute best for getting rid of the roaches. They hate the stuff, and it will kill an entire colony because they get it on them, then transfer it to the others.
My great grand parents, grandparents, parents, and I use boric acid. Anytime we start seeing roaches we dust a little around and they are gone! When I say we dust a little, I mean a little. Hold the bottle sideways, shake the powder up so it's at the nozzle but not clogging it up, and squeeze the bottle. If you got the powder in the right place, it will poof and billow out in a little cloud. That's all you need. A liter-size bottle of this stuff can last a lifetime! You'll never again call the exterminator because of roaches!

(More customer reviews)This is wonderful to prevent fleas. We have been using it around our dogs pen, in the pen and in our home. We didn't have a flea problem inside to begin with but we are using it to prevent that. Our dog was bringing in at least 6 fleas every day. We started putting it on the dog and it almost totally keeps the fleas from getting on her which is no small feat. Our house is surrounded by woods and she stays outside most of the day. It is also OK if she ends up eating some of it because it's safe. They actually use it to deworm animals anyway. One of the drawbacks is that diatomaceous earth dries out skin. We haven't had any issues with it yet but we're always watching.
We have also used it on our rose buds and blooms. We dust it right onto the roses. Japanese beetles and June bugs were eating them up but sense we started using the diatomaceous earth, I haven't found but one or two. The roses are much healthier now.
The only drawback is that after a rain or heavy dew, you have to reapply the dust. Also, if you plan to use it on or around your animals, it needs to be food grade.

(More customer reviews)I recently bought and used this cleaner and was really impressed with how well it did. It's a concentrate, so once it's diluted, the price is very inexpensive. I was surprised at how many different jobs it did around the house! I was planning on just cleaning the sinks and ended up unclogging drains, cleaning the toilets and mirrors. It can also be used in carpet cleaners, so I'm planning on trying that next. I also read that it fixes squeaky hinges. I like that it's an organic product but at the same time gets the job done well. So many organic products I've tried in the past did not work as well as the regular cleaners. Plus, this cleaner has such a nice, light scent that I don't have to air out the room when I'm done. All in all, I was very impressed and ordered two more bottles!

But, when I got home and used this within minutes I could see the fleas coming to the surface of my pet and just dying. I would give it a 5 start but i'm not sure how long it will last. (More customer reviews)I must admit I was very skeptical about this, but decided to give it a try out of sheer desperation, and based on the favorable reviews on Amazon. I've got a flea issue with my bedroom carpet, and have tried sprays, continuous vacuuming, boric acid treatments, and dosing my pet with Frontline & Advantage products. While the Advantage works pretty darn well ON the pet, the carpet was still infested no matter what I tried. I plugged in this little contraption on the floor next to my bed, and within TWO HOURS I've already captured 18 fleas, and can actually SEE them hopping across the carpet to get to the trap! I think this is a brilliant, safe, pesticide-free solution to dealing with those pesky little ankle-biting devils that hide in the carpet! I'll continue to vacuum, but I intend to keep this thing plugged in at all times to grab the ones that get away or are newly hatched. Don't hesitate to buy this product!

(More customer reviews)I've used this a few times over the past 2 years. I live in an area which has lots of trees and can be overrun with bugs in the summertime. All types too, spiders, ants, carpet beetles etc. It does a really good job when I spray the outside of the house around the doors and the windows and in the overhangs where spiders like to camp. Works well around outside lighting as well, seems to do a really nice job if applied before the bugs get there. Spraying inside the house along works great as well for keeping bugs at bay, especially carpet beetles.
Only downsides are that this does not kill silverfish, and some types of spiders appear unaffected by it. It says on the package that it takes care of them but my basement still has a problem even after repeated uses of the product. Which is too bad because these things are monsters and I hate them with a passion, still haven't found a product that can effectively kill them. The other downside, as someone else pointed out, there is a lingering smell for a day or two after application. It's not terrible it's just not pleasant.
Overall for the price I'd say it's a good product. The application takes a little while if you have a large or tall house but if you hate bugs and don't want to spend the hundreds of bucks for exterminator service this is a good product which will save you money and keep a lot of the bugs away.

Fleas Away Boric Acid Carpet Treatment - 1 Lb. Review

(More customer reviews)The good: This stuff works. Fleas are history! Period. It is about as non-toxic to pets and people as a flea killer can be. Compared to the high toxicity of traditional insecticide-based sprays, boric acid is innocuous. One treatment lasts for months. Even better, fleas never seem to develop any resistance to boric acid like they do to insecticides. Finally, boric acid is much, much cheaper than insecticides.
Notes: Boric acid takes four to six weeks to do its job. Be patient!. It kills slowly but effectively until *all* fleas and eggs are gone. After the initial kill, the effects last for months.
Boric acid is a white, flour-like dust. The lady of this house (the boss) would tell you that she loves the 100% effective flea control but does not like the unsightly, dusty coating on furniture. You must put up with the dusty appearance for *at least a week*, until you do the the first vacuuming.
I, on the other hand, could not care less about the appearance. From my point of view (1) the fleas are history, (2) neither she, nor I nor our pets are poisoned as we would be by the very toxic insecticide-based treatments, (3) the boric acid effect lasts for months and (4) fleas do not develop a resistance to boric acid. At least they have not developed any in the 15 years we've used it for flea control.
Comment: In contrast, while insecticide based flea controls are generally effective, they are also *toxic* to people and pets. The younger or older the people and pets, the more troublesome these effects are. Fleas develop resistance to insecticides. You have to use stronger and stronger insecticides, larger doses, rotate among insecticides, etc. to maintain their efficacy. This is bad cycle to get into for your health and your pets health. Enough said.
