I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again.

Designed for all floor types, this Dyson upright vacuum cleaner features a motorized brushbar that can be turned on to remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, or turned off to protect rugs and delicate floors. Its advanced Root Cyclone technology ensures thorough, efficient cleaning with no clogging or loss of suction. Dyson proves no loss of suction using the IEC 60312 Cl 2.9 test standard. The unit's pre-motor filter removes particles down to 0.1 micron and can be washed, while its post-motor electrostatic filter, which never needs replacing, traps harmful carbon emissions from the motor.
The vacuum cleaner also comes equipped with a quick-draw Telescope reach; the wand releases and expands 17-feet at the touch of a button for stairs and high-reach cleaning. In addition, special edge-cleaning whiskers, angled to reach down between the skirting board and the floor, flick the dust from the edge into the airflow. The intake nozzles of the on-board tools direct high-velocity airflow down into the carpet pile, which provides two main advantages. More gets picked up because the directional force of the air agitates and dislodges dust, and it keeps airflow continuous even when vacuuming curtains or upholstery, preventing them from becoming stuck to the cleaner.

Thoughtfully designed, the unit's hygienic 5/7-gallon bin quickly empties without ever having to touch the dust--simply pull the trigger. The clear bin means no bags to buy, plus it allows for easily viewing the cleaning progress and gauging when it's full. Air expelled from the unit contains up to 150 times less mold and bacteria than common breathing air thanks to the vacuum's money-saving, lifetime HEPA filter. Furthermore, Dyson upright vacuums are the first and only vacuums certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. Other highlights include a 14-foot quick-draw hose, a wide channel for picking up larger pieces, auto carpet-height adjustment, a 35-2/5-foot cord, and an ergonomic design with a low handle that feels lighter to carry. The durably built vacuum cleaner measures 13-3/8 by 14 by 44-6/7 inches.

Editor's note: This is a reconditioned vacuum. Reconditioned generallymeans that the vacuum has been returned to the manufacturer, who returns theappliance to like-new condition. Some appliances may contain cosmetic blemishes.

Dyson DC14 All-Floors Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson is a great product but it's certainly NOT perfect. The 'Never lose suction' tagline is a marketing ploy, since Dyson too will get clogged and lose suction if not properly maintained. All other vacuum machines will NOT lose suction either if the filter bags are replaced often enough.
Overall, however, its performance beats all other vacuums (including the over-hyped Oreck, which is simply a rip-off) hands-down.
- Every few months, the user must clean out the central cylinder of the very fine dust, or it will get clogged and lose suction. The way you do this is by removing the dust collector and then separate the core cylinder from the glass casing. Use another vacuum to suck dirt out of the little holes on the side of the cylinder. Also, if you look up the cylinder from the bottom, you'll see caked dust collected at the top of the cylinder. If you gently bang the cylinder (upright) on the floor, you'll be shocked how much fine dust (about two cups worth) will fall out of the cylinder. Use the other vacuum to suck them away. Also, take out the 'permanent' filter and wash them. They, too, get clogged with the very fine dust.
- The machine is very heavy and bulky, and it's quite a chore to transport it between floors. The hose extension is very awkward to use because the point of bending is near the tip. The high profile of the vacuum head makes it impossible to vacuum under the bed, couch, etc.
- The instruction manual is poorly written, and setting up and maintaining the machine takes a steep learning curve. Dyson should include a video instruction.
- I, too, and concerned about how much carpet fiber the Dyson is tearing off the carpet, which you can clearly see in the dust collector. However, you can also see the amount of coarse and fine dust it's picking up as well. One impressive feature of Dyson that lived up to the hype is that it will pick up much dust from carpet that was just cleaned by a regular vacuum machine.
- Dyson rarely goes on sale, but I bought mine at Sears, which had Dyson on sale last year for $379. Also, buy the regular Dyson and avoid the 'Animal', which is a rip-off. The rotating brush that comes with the 'Animal' is air powered and is too weak to work well on the stairs.
Summary: If you have a large house with a lot of carpeted areas, then Dyson is for you. You may also build some muscle by carrying this behemoth up and down the stairs. However, you may need another vacuum for the stairs and also for a quick clean up in the kitchen.

Replacement Dyson DC07/DC14 Clutch Assembly #900252-04 Review

Replacement Dyson DC07/DC14 Clutch Assembly #900252-04

After 5 years of good service, my DC07 brush just stopped spinning. At first, I thought, no problem, just buy a new belt. Not with the Dyson. After a lot of research, when I found that you had to replace this clutch assembly, I seriously thought about just buying a new vac, but figured - wth - for (...) or so I'll give it a shot. There is a beautiful step-by-step instruction procedure on an Internet site which specializes in giving repair advice on Dyson vacs. The whole process took about 40 minutes, not counting the time I needed to go out and get a T-15 Torx screwdriver, which is absolutely essential to the process (make sure you have one of these before you start. Just be patient, follow the instructions, and you can do it.
My problem was caused by accumulated cat hair which the person (unnamed) who used the Dyson didn't take the time to simply clean out of the brushbar after each use. This built-up mess eventually causes the brush to be harder to turn, which heats up the belts and stretches them to the point that they don't have enough friction to spin the brushbar anymore. Probably could have gotten away with just replacing the belts, but you have to take the clutch out to do that, and for the additional few dollars it makes sense to replace the clutch as well. It was also a good opportunity to thoroughly clean all of the parts which had to be removed.

In retrospect, I'm glad I did this complicated, but not at all difficult task, as I now have what amounts to a good-as-new vac for (...). As long as you clean the filters as directed and exercise common sense in maintaining this machine, I can't see why it won't last for a long while.

Dyson DC07 Brush bar for vaccum cleaner Review

Dyson DC07 Brush bar for vaccum cleaner

Needed to replace the old brush because hair & lint bunged up one of the ends and melted it and made it hard to turn (which then also burned out the clutch). This is not an OEM part, but then it is also half the price. It looks (and fits) absolutely identical to the brush it replaced, other than color (and you have to admit, this goes with the gaudy Dyson color schemes much better than a plane black one). Quality of the product seems good.
NOTE there are two versions of this brush, one for DC07/14's without a clutch, and one for with. The description does not say, but this is for the cleaners with the clutch (with the bare floor / carpet knob). The brush for cleaners without a clutch looks markedly different and don't look interchangeable.

I've been using this product for a month now, and am satisfied overall. Its suction is incredible, the beater-bar does a great job on big carpets. Emptying the canister is genius simple - just hold it over the garbage can, press the button, and you are done! It is relatively lightweight for an upright, and the way it all clips together it is very easy to carry around and up/down stairs. It also looks cool for a vacuum, so my kids want to play with it (for now, anyway). Way less hassle than my old FilterQueen with four seperate pieces to lug around!
Here's what I would have liked to have known in advance: The super suction means it tries to eat small throw carpets, and you have to ackwardly put a foot on both ends of the carpet to keep it down while you vacuum it; Although it does have a very long reach when the wand is removed from the upright, the flexible tube is so springy it pulls back on itself and drags the upright part around while you are trying to use the wand part. It says it reaches 17ft - but effectively it is only usable for about 6-8 feet because of the springiness. It is really only a FLOOR vacuum, as it cannot be used for things like vacuuming the car, or dusting around stuff on top of the piano or mantle, as the business end of the wand is a four foot straight tube - the flexibility is all at the motor end of the wand. It does not go under any furniture, but I can live with that.
