I've tried all the odor removers out there (the enzymes, cleaners, professional carpet cleaners, diatomaceous earth, powders, granules, everything at pet stores). Then, about a year ago, someone told me about X-O. I gave it a try on a couch that a feral cat had peed on...IT WORKED and saved the couch!!! So, I began using it on all the pet accidents. It removes all the odor. I use the X-O plus cleaner, and it's amazingly effective at cleaning up the poop from the carpet. I always have this on hand, and was very happy to find it at Amazon for less than I was paying the local distributor. This is a wonderful product.

We've been battling our basement since we moved into our new (rental) home almost two months ago. It's extremely rare to have a basement in Phoenix, AZ. Apparently neighborhood cats and mice found it novel as well and decided to use it as a toilet since the previous owner/occupants left the outside cellar door wide open the majority of the time. The stench and dampness (it's pretty wet here right now and we're in a very low part of the city) was pretty overwhelming. To top it off about 1/3 of the basement is dirt (dirt floor), allowing the damp dirt smell to just hang in the air down there before filtering up right into my beloved closet. We were skeptical of this product but in desperation we threw down the money for two bags of it to help control the odor in the basement (approx. 700 sq ft).
The product:
I hung two bags of this stuff from the beams in the basement, and within a couple of hours noticed a massive decrease in the odor which no amount of cleaning, vacuuming, and sprays had eliminated in the weeks before. Within three weeks I decided that it was "good enough" down there to move one of the bags to my closet area. With the dirt floor I realize the odor may never be completely gone in the basement, but it had stopped filtering upstairs, which was really my main concern. Anyway, within a few hours of putting the bag in my closet the smell in my closet that was coming from the basement (and some sweaty gym shoes, I admit) was GONE. I'm leaving one in the basement and one in the upper floor of the house to continue to act as odor control/dehumidifiers. They seem easy enough to "clean" too and I don't know that it needs to be done often (I've had these for 6 weeks and not had to do it yet). Apparently one just tosses them out in the sun for a day. Sun is not generally a hard to come by in Phoenix, but I don't know how well this cleaning process would work elsewhere in the winter months.
The only con:
Packaging was a little though to open and I accidentally ripped of the silver hanging ring on one bag as I tore off the plastic packaging.
Take home message:
This has really been an excellent product for us and we're very pleased! I don't know how well something like this would work for odors that keep coming (like if the cats and mice continued to use the basement as a toilet) but to rid a space of a funky odor, it worked like a charm for us and I don't know that we'll ever take these down other than to "clean" them a few time a year.

(More customer reviews)I have been using XO for the last 7 or 8 years. I first had to use it on a leather couch that my cats decided to use as a litterbox. Worked perfectly to remove the stench (with some soap and water as well - hosed the cushions down outside), after I had tried a bunch of other useless pet stain/smell removers. Useful to remove dog urine as well. Has a pleasant, not overpowering or 'chemical' smell. Does not smell like typical pet stain removers. I use it as a room freshener and in the trash bin to remove odors. Smells better than Febreze.

Before using this, we used various industrial strength chemicals, and nothing compares to the success we've had after switching to this baking powder. we sprinkle it as soon as we enter the room, and as we leave, vacuum (~15 min after sprinkling it). After switching, we haven't had even one guest complaint about the smell.
I STRONGLY recommend this to anyone who's trying to get out any ciggerette, alcohol, pungent odor.

First we toweled the spot and cleaned it with Woolite, but even after scrubbing the area and letting it dry several times over the course of two days, the odor was still pretty bad. We headed to the pet supply store to find something stronger, and picked this. Admittedly, a big factor in our choice was that we didn't know much about any of the products, and this cost less than most of the other power products (most of which contained enzymes to "eat" the foul odors). The other big factor was that this didn't have any perfumes or fragrances added, as these are a problem for a member of our household.
We were amazed at how well this worked. Following the directions, we sprinkled the white Odorzout powder over the problem area, and left it overnight. It said it would work better with a fan running on it, but we tried it without the extra electricity use first. The next morning, we vacuumed up the powder. Hooray--the smell was gone!
Since then, we've used it once more when the same problem happened, and it worked just as well. This second time we didn't use Woolite or anything else first. We just toweled the area, let it finish drying for a bit, and then used the Odorzout. The next morning, one member of our household who is *extremely* sensitive to smells could still detect some urine scent, although the rest of us couldn't smell anything. We used the Odorzout a second time on the same area, and then everyone agreed the smell was completely gone.My only concern was whether the area was really "clean" after being sprinkled and vacuumed, without also shampooing the carpet with anything. According to the package, the Odorzout "attracts and traps the gas and bacteria molecules that cause odor, even in flooring under carpet. When you vacuum it up, odors are gone for good." From what I can tell, that appears to be true. I'll still keep shampooing my carpets twice a year anyway, though!
So, I'm giving it five stars because it does exactly what it says it will do, very well. I wish it worked instantly, but at least this fixes the problem overnight.

(More customer reviews)I tried this product because I have 2 cats... one of which is picky about her litter box and urinates on the carpet. The bottle states it works on "the toughest" odors and stains, but I beg to differ. Here is what I found:
PROS:
- has a pleasant smell
- covers/eliminates most pet/dander smells
- easy to apply
- inexpensive
CONS:
- leaves residue in carpet
- spray bottle does not penetrate carpet very deep
- tougher smells return after the carpet dries
- will not eliminate urine smells
I have darker carpet so the "stains" aspect is hard to review. While the product does work at first, after a few hours you will notice the smells returning. If you are thinking of purchasing this for urine smells, I suggest looking elsewhere. Otherwise, it isn't a bad product.

(More customer reviews)I definitely noticed the difference each time I added this treatment, so much so that I'm adding this review here even though I bought this stuff at Bed, Bath & Beyond.
Earlier this year I acquired a mid-century modern Rya rug, a natural wool shag that has spent most of its life in storage and thus had taken on a distinct musty smell. This is the only carpet on otherwise hardwood floors so it's clear where the odor was coming from. When I had a pregnant friend over and she politely but firmly insisted I keep the window open on a cool day I knew I had to do something about the slightly vomity stale smell, which I would notice upon entering the place and then forget about and less sensitive noses would not apparently pick up on (or were attached to mouths too polite to say). I started with the crystals and opening the window each day, which didn't do much.
The first shake treatment not only reduced the mustiness 40%, the rug felt much nicer and fuller after treatment. The container was enough for three or four treatments (it's a big area rug - 8 x 12) and before this last treatment I had it down to about 10% of the previous odor - I believe I have just delivered the knockout punch.
Bonus - my kids are super picky about scents (they hate them) and did not complain even while I was doing the treatment. It's a nice fresh scent, natural.
So here is a rug that a reputable chem dry outfit had said they couldn't help restore (they gave it a cursory cleaning and left without charging me) that is now nearly as good as new, and certainly as good as it gets for a rug from the 1960's.

Bac-Out was recommended to me at the health food store and I was amazed at the results! In the past I used a white vinegar/water solution, but Bac-Out works even better. (More customer reviews)This is the best odor remover I've ever used. It not only gets rid of pet odors, but it will also get rid of just about any other thing that stinks. I even works on mothball smells. It has just a hint of smell at first (called a tracer scent) so that you can tell where you've spread it, but then when it dries, all smells are gone including the tracer. I have trouble with a lot of other odor removers that they give me a migraine. Febreeze will like to kill me. But I've never had a problem with this one. I will never buy anything else.

Bio Kleen Bac Out with Foaming Sprayer Review

(More customer reviews)Well after trying mulitple other products (miracle something, oxy clean, oxy clean for pet odors, resolve, various carpet cleaners, steam cleaning) I have FINALLY found something that truely works.
STORY: Dog who has accidents on carpeting (son neglects to take her out while I am @ work). I sprinkled some of this stuff on the carpet and waited for the magic to begin. Much to my disbelief, it did!! Before the smell was so bad - now I smell nothing. With other products, the basement smelled of floral urine or perfume de urine. Not anymore.
Would definitely recommend. Only drawback, can't remove all of granuals out of carpeting - but I don't care -
